Join the TV presenter and garden designer, Nick Bailey, in Cornwall for this fabulous four-day tour of the county’s finest gardens

The magical gardens of Cornwall are renowned the world over. Home to a wealth of rare and beautiful plants and trees, they're a fantastic destination for garden-lovers and horticulturalists alike. On this four-day touring holiday, exclusive to readers, you'll take in eight of Cornwall's finest gardens - from Lanhydrock, a magnificent late-Victorian country house with parkland and a wooded estate, to the modern Trelissick, with its extraordinary views over the Fal Estuary. You'll also meet and put your questions to the gardening expert Nick Bailey, who is a TV presenter and bestselling author. He will give a tour of Bosvigo, one of his favourite gardens in the region. You'll be based at the delightful four-star Alverton Hotel for three nights in the cathedral city of Truro.

Meet Nick Bailey

Nick will join you for a day of exclusive experiences, starting with a very special tour around the walled gardens at Bosvigo. They surround a wonderful Georgian house and are alive with colour from March through to September - there's a woodland walk with borders exploding with dahlias, roses and nasturtiums, a 'hot' summer garden and excellent hellebore nursery selling some rare examples of the popular perennial. As a popular gardening presenter and broadcaster, Nick is a regular presence on Gardeners' World and has also appeared on The Great British Garden Revival, Big Dreams Small Spaces, The One Show, Radio 4's The Food Programme and presented coverage of the RHS Flower Shows. His latest book, Revive Your Garden, was published last year. Nick will join readers for an evening drinks reception and give a talk and Q&A about his life and work, as well as some of his other favourite Cornish gardens.

Eight glorious garden visits

Along with Bosvigo, you'll enjoy guided tours of Lanhydrock, Trelissick, Marsh Villa, Trebah, Lamorran and Trebartha. Marsh Villa, a small three-acre garden, is in the former tidal creek made famous by Daphne du Maurier's The House on the Strand. This formal garden is centred around an impressive pond, set within escallonia hedges and boasts colour from the tulip season right through to the heleniums and eupatorium. Lamorran House, overlooking Falmouth Bay, has an Italianate-style garden with Japanese influences, Trebartha is on the eastern edge of Bodmin Moor and Trebah is a sub-tropical paradise that flourished to become one of England's greatest gardens by the 1930s.

National Trust Gardens

Two National Trust properties are included on the itinerary. Lanhydrock is a magnificent 17th-century house surrounded by formal terraced gardens, which formed part of a scheme of improvements overseen by George Gilbert Scott in 1857. Beyond the terraces are informal pleasure grounds, and the beech avenue is also home to the National Collection of crocosmia. In contrast, Trelissick is a modern garden, constantly evolving with new planting and fresh ideas. The iconic Water Tower was built for irrigation and fire-control, and the toilets are flushed with rainwater from underground reservoirs.

Your hotel

Itinerary

  1. Day
    1
    Trebartha
    Trebartha, United Kingdom

Depart from London today - a coach will also pick up in Reading, Swindon and Bristol - and travel by coach to Trebartha, on the eastern edge of Bodmin Moor. The gardens here feature water, trees and lovely views. The estate had a lot of Rhododendron ponticum cleared following infestation with Phytopthora ramorum (so-called sudden oak death), and has presented an opportunity for a new landscape gardening project. We will do a circular walk that takes in the pool, cascades, wooded terraces, fish ponds and the walled garden.

Continue to your comfortable accommodation, the four-star Alverton Hotel in the cathedral city of Truro, a historic Grade II-listed building with luxurious rooms, two AA rosette food and delicious drinks. You'll receive a welcome drink on arrival before dinner at the hotel.

  2. Day
    2
    Trelissick and Bosvigo
    Bosvigo, United Kingdom

Following a full English breakfast at the hotel, travel to Trelissick, a modern garden which was created within shelter belts planted 200 years ago. The garden is constantly evolving, with new planting and fresh ideas. Trelissick has seen trees grow to maturity, but has become a dynamic, forward-looking estate. The iconic Water Tower was built for irrigation and fire-control; now the lavatories are flushed with rainwater stored underground in modern reservoirs. Heat is extracted from kitchen appliances and the sun to provide hot water and heating.

After an opportunity for lunch (not included) in the cathedral city of Truro, you'll continue to Bosvigo, where Nick Bailey will join you for a tour of the gardens of this handsome 18th-century house. Explore the woodland garden which explodes with dahlias, roses and nasturtiums and several beautifully planted enclosures show exciting, vibrant colours. There is also an excellent nursery selling some rare plants.

Return to the hotel, where Nick Bailey will give a talk on gardens and gardening, after which dinner will be served.

    Meals - Breakfast, Dinner
  3. Day
    3
    Trebah and Falmouth
    Falmouth, United Kingdom

Following breakfast this morning, you'll visit two contrasting gardens. Trebah is a wild and colourful Cornish garden with something for everyone. The garden was laid out originally in the 1840s and flourished to become one of England's great gardens by the 1930s. After the death of the then owner, the garden was sadly neglected for many years until it was taken over by the Hibbert family, who still run it today. At this time of year we can expect to see a fine display of Hydrangeas. A guided tour is included.

Transfer later on to Falmouth, where there will be an opportunity for lunch (not included) and some free time to enjoy this lively harbour town.

In the afternoon you'll visit the small Italianate garden of Lamorran House, which overlooks Falmouth Bay. You may also spot some Japanese influences in this intimate garden, with running water featured in the many pools and streams. The gardens are divided into areas of woodland, the Japanese water garden and temples and archways as well as the Venetian-style bridge overlooking the bay.

Enjoy dinner at the hotel once again this evening.

    Meals - Breakfast, Dinner
  4. Day
    4
    Lanhydrock Gardens
National Trust - Lanhydrock , United Kingdom

Following breakfast, check out of the hotel and depart for a visit to Marsh Villa, situated in a former tidal creek made famous by Daphne du Maurier's book The House on the Strand. The main feature of the garden is its magnificent pond. A passion for perennials brought about the construction of a secluded, rather formal garden set within escallonia hedges. Here there is colour all year round from the tulip season right through to the heleniums and eupatoriums.

You'll continue to Lanhydrock Gardens where lunch is available on arrival (not included). Now the property of the National Trust, Lanhydrock was the home of the Robartes family from 1620 until 1953. The magnificent 17th-century house is surrounded by formal terraced gardens although you'll also find the informal pleasure grounds full of trees and shrubs. The parkland with its famous beech avenue remains one of the finest examples in Cornwall. Lanhydrock Gardens feature a formal courtyard garden, beds of modern roses and a woodland garden, rich in flowering shrubs and trees, especially rhododendrons and magnolias. Lanhydrock is also home to the National Collection of crocosmias.

Depart Lanhydrock around 4.00pm and return to the original departure point where arrival is expected this evening.
